About Mary Lou Lyon, LPC
Education and Credentials
I am a graduate of Marymount University with a masters degree in counseling psychology and Johns Hopkins University with a post-masters certificate in clinical counseling. I am licensed as a professional counselor in Virginia and I am in my twenty-fourth year of private practice.
My early experience as a counselor was in a group practice of psychologists where I received extensive supervision in relationship focused psychodynamic therapy. I've continued to develop in this area through classes at the Washington School of Psychiatry. I have also had advanced training in grief therapy, couples therapy and attachment theory.

My Approach to Therapy
I describe my counseling style as strongly relational with an emphasis on an individual's inner world and psychological development. Our emotional problems come about in the context of relationship and I believe that healing comes about through new healthy relationships with your therapist and with others in your world. I especially enjoy growth-oriented therapy that focuses on both emotional and spiritual issues.
